Engineering Extra

Organised by Mr Olsson
Fridays 3pm to 4pm
Room

This group is for students interested in Mechatronics and real world robotics

Chess Club

Chess is a game of the ages, and for all ages: playing chess helps to improve your memory, concentration, planning and thinking skills. Most important of all, though, is that chess is fun! We know from numerous studies that playing chess improves the social skills, spatial skills, numerical abilities, verbal aptitude, creative thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills of students. Sounds interesting? Then come and join the Comet Bay College Chess Club.

Interested students from all years are welcome to participate in this lunchtime activity. The aim of the Chess Club is simple: whether you want to simply learn how to play, or improve your level of proficiency, then please come and join us every Tuesday and Thursday lunchtime in Room 504 (next to the Library).

Each year Comet Bay College holds an annual Chess Tournament, where we determine and acknowledge a champion for each year group, as well as an overall school champion. We also enter a team of our very best players into the Regional Chess Championship. These competitions are a fantastic opportunity to promote sportsmanship and friendship through a game that people from all around the world have been enjoying for centuries. Come on down and see what all the fuss is about!

Robotics Club

Organised by Hari Chilapa & Jenny Burton
Tuesdays after school from 3pm to 4 pm
Room 504 (next to the Library)

Comet Bay College is committed to providing rigorous and challenging extension programs for our students. The after-school Robotics Club is a great opportunity for those who are interested in technological innovation and creative problem solving. The Robotics Club also introduces students to numerous Computer Science Extension programs, and to the field of Mechatronics, which leads into Engineering as an upper school subject.

Owing to generous sponsorship provided by the Schools Pathway Program and supplemented by the Gifted and Talented Program Students, Robotics Club participants are able to use the latest EV3 robots. These robots are wireless devices, and are controlled via various mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, using Bluetooth.

Members of the Robotics Club will ultimately participate in the LEGO League, with Curtin University hosting the state tournament of this global competition. Students will develop higher order thinking and problem solving skills in the process of designing and building robots that are able to complete a variety of tasks, such as catapulting an object into a goal, opening doors, responding to and avoiding obstacles and retrieving and carrying items. In addition to designing the robots to carry out these tasks, students must also apply programming skills to ensure that their robots are equipped with the ability to respond appropriately to dynamic conditions.

Last year was the first time that Comet Bay College competed in this competition, with our students performed remarkably, winning the trophy for the best-designed robot, and finishing second overall of the 27 competing schools. The Robotics Club will be aiming to go one better this year!

Nautilus Club

Organised by Jody Lewin & Jennifer Burton
Room 813

In 2012 Comet Bay College recognised the need to support the education of Gifted and Talented students in the early years K – 4 through the introduction of the Nautilus Club and subsequently the Nautilus Master Class for year groups 5 – 6. Through this early intervention initiative, provision for gifted students has enabled appropriate learning practices to be delivered to ensure that these selected students are able to thrive.

These early experiences are proving to set a strong foundation for future academic success. This is an exciting and innovative project that is highly valued by primary schools, teachers, parents and students alike and continues to move from strength to strength.

Nominated students, who meet strict criteria, from Comet Bay, Secret Harbour, Golden Bay and Singleton Primary Schools are invited to Comet Bay College for a two-hour session each week throughout the school year.

Focus of Nautilus Club
To provide an opportunity to develop students individual abilities and skills beyond the regular classroom.
To provide a chance for students to develop relationships and interact with like-minded peers.
To develop Higher Order Thinking Skills utilising Blooms Taxonomy.
Learning to utilize thinking tools including 6 Thinking Hats, CoRT Thinking Tools and Graphic Organizers.
Develop students understanding of their individual learning styles, focusing on:
Left Brain / Right Brain learning.
Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic learning styles.
Multiple Intelligence approach to learning.
Provide opportunities for students to practice and develop their life skills of goal setting, decision-making skills and personal organisation skills.

High Flyers

Comet Bay College has many highly capable students who all strive to ‘Seek Excellence’ in every pursuit. To acknowledge and support our most academically elite Year 12 students, in 2015 the College launched an exciting new initiative – the High Flyers’ Club.

Students who achieve outstanding results in Year 11 will be invited to join this select group in Year 12. These invitations are extended to students in recognition of their impressive academic results, diligent work ethic and positive attitude.

The High Flyers’ Club is tailored to the needs of students, and offers guidance, direction and support to enhance the performance of its members throughout the year. Throughout the year, further invitations to join the inaugural members of the Club will be extended to other deserving students.
